Do you like keeping your e-moto motor in one piece? Let me explain: you’ve probably noticed the stock bashplates are, well, flimsy. Good to protect the motor from fairy dust, but I wouldn’t trust it when it comes to riding through the woods. I’ve dragged my bikes more than once over logs and boulders, and without a sturdy skidplate, I would have done some serious damage.
However, if you’re riding a lightweight machine like the Surron LBX on paved roads or light trails, you don’t want a huge chunk of armor adding unnecessary weight to your bike. Sure, you need the protection, but not at the expense of solid weight gain.
This is where the V1.5 skid plate comes in. We knew the V1.0 was working awesomely, but advancement in the electric dirt bike world is rapid, and it wasn’t long before the V1.0 skid plate wouldn’t fit all the latest models.
We then started working on the V2.0 skid plate – the one for riders who love torturing bikes on hard enduro circuits. This was the new version of the V1.0 skid plate, and compatible with the latest e-motos. However, V2.0 was overkill for everyday riders, so we created the Nomad skid plate and called it V1.5.
Let’s look at why you need a skid plate, who needs a skid plate, and what to do if you’re not a huge enduro fan but still want some protection.
We started with the basics.
I always knew my skid plates were really useful for protecting the expensive stuff underneath, but I didn’t stop to think about all the little details.
This thing needs to be:
- robust for impacts
- airy for good cooling, and
- slick enough to slide over rocks.
- On top of that, it needs to be as light as possible.
Normally, strong and lightweight don’t go together, but Rusty and his team have been working hard on skid plates for years and have solved this dilemma.
For enduro-style riding, the V1.0 and V2.0 are super strong and will protect all the expensive stuff like your motor and controller from rocks and logs. If you’re riding on the street and dirt roads, you probably won’t encounter big rocks and logs, so the need for extreme protection isn’t required.

What’s wrong with my stock skid plate?
However, it would be highly advisable to ditch the flimsy OEM skid plate your e-moto came with. Protecting the expensive stuff at the bottom of your e-moto is like having cheap insurance. While stock e-motos do come with skid plates, I don’t think they’d provide any protection from any impact – have you seen a stock skid plate up close?!
Stock skid plates are more for stopping small bits of dirt and rock from flinging up onto your motor, not impacts.
The evolution of the skid plate: Nomad V1.5
How do you create a skid plate that doesn’t need to be boulder-stopping strong, but still strong enough to protect a motor from the occasional misjudged hop on the urban landscape? You create a brand new design!
The Nomad V1.5 has the perfect angles so if you do get caught on an obstacle, your e-moto will slide over it, not get stuck on it. This skid plate incorporates overlapping edges to provide additional strength. It has been CAD stress tested up to 3500 pounds of force before any deformation, and verified with real-world riding.
In other words, we trashed a bunch of prototypes to make sure you won’t trash yours.

Installation Instructions
One of the many factors that Rusty and his team look at when designing a new part is the ease of installation. All Heavy Hitter parts need to be easily assembled, allowing more time riding and less time in the garage.
Installation of the Nomad skid plate is straightforward. It only requires you to remove the stock skid plate and replace it with the Nomad skid plate, all up removing and replacing a few screws.

This skid plate is perfect for any rider who loves having fun on the streets, doing stunts, wheelies, or riding dirt tracks. If you’re looking to keep the weight right down and have a clean, minimalist look, the Nomad is for you.
Again, if you’re the rider who loves finding steep sections to climb, dirt tracks with obstacles, rocky gardens, and generally enduro-style riding, then don’t get the Nomad skidplate; instead, look at the V2.0 skid plate.
