Surron Hyper Bee

Should You Plan On Buying a Surron Hyper Bee for Your Kid? (Or Yourself?)

Surron’s Hyper Bee arguably started the new age of electric pit bikes. First unveiled in late 2024, the Hyper Bee initially received confused looks and left riders wondering what all the hype was about. What was the point of this e-moto?

Then things got even more confusing. The internet was left to speculate, and so it did. Rumors spread of a launch in December 2024, and electric dirt bike enthusiasts waited for this strange addition to the Surron lineup.

In the meantime, Electro & Co. has released their mini electric e-moto, and so has E Ride Pro. The trend has begun in full, and electric small but crazy high-performance e-motos are now highly sought after. Riders started working out these mini e-motos might be mini, but no less of a proper e-moto. Proper suspension, feel, everything. They can even race off-road if you’re brave enough to tackle boulders bigger than the bike itself.

The Surron Hyper Bee should make a great entry-level e-moto, however it could also make an awesome bike for adults. It’s the e-moto you can’t help but ride with a big smile! Let’s round up what we know so far…

Surron Hyper Bee Specs

The Hyper Bee is a proper electric dirt bike. It has all the gear you’d expect on the full-sized e-moto and more. With a PMSM motor and controller, primary gear drive and secondary chain drive, and with a decent top speed of 34mph. We’ll compare it directly to E Ride Pro and Electro & Co. later in this article.

There are a few options when you purchase the Hyper Bee, and these options are aimed at helping kids grow into their bikes. The options include different-sized tires, different seat cushion thickness, and adjustable fork options.

The color options are pink, lime green, yellow, and bright blue.

What sets this apart from the bigger e-motos (apart from the size!) is the assistant functions. The Surron Hyper Bee e-moto comes with a controller. If you’re a Mom and Dad watching your kid around the track, you can talk to your little daredevil via the remote control and the e-moto speaker. It also has the feature to choose the power setting and can even turn the power off if needed. As a parent to I-don’t-believe-in-gravity-kids, I’m liking this feature!

Can kids ride the Hyper Bee?

Even though we, as adults, have a blast on this e-moto, it has been designed as an entry-level electric dirt bike for kids.

Here’s a comparison for those with dirtbike knowledge:

Surron Hyper Bee:

  • 5000kW motor
  • Reaches 31 mph in around 3.6 seconds
  • Weighs 83 lbs
  • Seat height adjustable to 26-27.8”, wheelbase 40.7”
  • MSRP $2799 at the time of writing

Yamaha YZ65:

  • 65cc 2-stroke engine
  • Reaches 41 mph
  • Weighs 134 lbs
  • Seat height fixed at 29.7”, wheelbase 44.9”
  • MSRP $4499 at the time of writing

Although these two dirtbikes are similar in size, the YZ65 is much heavier and has a faster top speed. It is designed for kids around 8-12. It’s a serious dirt bike. The same can also be said for the Hyper Bee. Don’t let the part that it’s electric fool you, this isn’t a toy to give to just any child.

In fact, considering the YZ65, the rider will need to learn how to negotiate gears and a clutch, while the Hyper Bee just needs the rider to turn the throttle. This can lead to potentially dangerous situations for the wrong person. However, with the Hyper Bee, the option is there to choose a lower power setting and have the remote in your (Mom or Dad’s) hand for added safety.

Can kids ride the Hyper Bee? Yes, I’ll be considering this for my daughter in a few years – she’s currently 4. But I’m also all about education for her – riding with the correct gear, practicing in safe environments (relatively speaking), and teaching her the correct techniques. And most importantly, modeling how I want her to ride.

As for what age is best – it depends on the child, can they follow instructions? Do they have the balance and ability to manipulate the controls? Do they fit the e-moto? I think Surron has done well with offering different options for height as your child grows. If you’re not sure if your child is at the right age, start at your local track and ask some questions.

Can you ride the Hyper Bee on the street?

As of the time of writing, Surron hasn’t released a road-legal version of the Hyper Bee. Due to its size, I’m not sure that Surron will ever make a road-legal version, but follow Surron on their Instagram or make sure you’re a member of our newsletter community to hear about all the latest news as we hear it.

If you’re interested in getting a Hyper Bee or any other tiny e-moto road registered in the USA, check out our sister company Dirt Legal to find out more information. In other parts of the world, you’ll need to contact your local government transport office to find out more information. In most cases, you will need a motorcycle license to ride on the road.

Surron Hyper Bee vs E Ride Pro Mini vs Electro & Co. ETM Mini

Since Surron announced the release of the Hyper Bee, E Ride Pro and Electro and Co have entered the mini e-moto market in a strong way.

Here is a brief rundown:

E Ride Pro Mini

  • Made by high performance company E Ride Pro, with all the features you’d expect from them, just in a compact size.
  • Huge 60V30Ah battery, with 6kW Peak output
  • All high-quality parts, including FastAce forks
  • Regen braking
  • Adjustable foot peg position depending on the size of the rider

Electro and Company ETM Mini

NOTE: Electro and Co also make the ETM RTR, the higher-performance 8kW version of the mini e-moto.Today we’ll compare the ETM Mini as it is a closer comparison, designed more for kids.

  • The first full-build e-moto from performance parts company Electro and Co.
  • High-quality parts
  • Three selectable power levels on a 3.5kW Peak output motor
  • 48V Battery allows up to 10 miles of riding
  • Recommended age is 6+

All three of these mini e-motos would make any kid – or adult’s day! They are all built with high-quality parts, all of which you’d expect to find on the bigger versions of the e-moto. The Hyper Bee is the lightest, while the E Ride Pro Mini is the most powerful.

The question would now be – are you buying this for yourself or your kid?!

Adults can have fun on the Surron Hyper Bee too!!

If you’re looking at buying an awesome fun pit-bike for yourself, I’d be looking at the E Ride Pro Mini as it’s crazy powerful for such a small bike, and with the high-end build quality that E Ride provides. Or, I’d be looking at the even-more-powerful ETM RTR – 8kW on a 130lb bike – nice!

If it’s for your child, then the e-motos that have parts you can adjust would come in handy as kids grow at an alarming rate! The top speed could be handy as you can adjust the levels down, and then increase the power output as your child learns. That way you’ll find you’ll get more life from your e-moto as your kid learns and grows (and you get to play with a higher-performance bike!)

Can you mod the Hyper Bee?

As the Surron Hyper Bee has just been released, and we’ve only just got our hands on one, it’s too early to see what aftermarket parts will become available. As it’s Surron built, I’m sure many parts will be transferable from the Surron LBX, but we don’t know for sure yet.

At GritShift R&D, we’ll go through our vigorous testing process, finding the weaker points on the e-moto to see what might need an upgrade. At first glance, this e-moto looks like it’s a decent build – but you know we like to ride hard, and that means things need reinforcing to withstand jumps and tricks.

Stay tuned for the full GritShift torture test of a Surron Hyper Bee by full-size adult riders, hopefully sometime in the near future! If we can’t break it, chances are your kids can’t either!
